Top Big Ten point guard Dug McDaniel to transfer from Michigan
Michigan sophomore Dug McDaniel, one of the best point guards in the Big Ten, entered the transfer portal on Monday.
McDaniel took a dramatic step forward as a sophomore this season, averaging 16.3 points and 4.7 assists, while shooting nearly 37% from 3-point range. He started the season in impression fashion, scoring 26 points and distributing seven assists in a win over St. John’s, and then had 33 points and seven 3-pointers in an overtime loss at Oregon. Just before Christmas, McDaniel went for 33 points, eight rebounds and five assists in a double-overtime defeat to Florida.
His season – and Michigan’s season – took a turn in mid-January, when the school announced that McDaniel had been suspended for the Wolverines’ next six road games. They ended up going 0-6 without McDaniel and winning just two of their final 19 games.
As a freshman, the former ESPN 100 recruit started 26 games and averaged 8.6 points and 3.6 assists.
McDaniel’s departure comes days after Michigan fired head coach Juwan Howard following an 8-24 campaign. Howard was at the helm in Ann Arbor for five seasons.
Another Michigan guard, George Washington III also entered the portal on Monday. The former ESPN 100 recruit averaged 1.2 points in 22 games this season.
