Source: LB Josey Jewell to sign 3-year deal with Panthers

It’s the second defensive addition made by the Panthers on Tuesday. Earlier, the team agreed to terms with defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson on a three-year, $22.3 million deal, a league source told ESPN, confirming a report by NFL Network.

On Monday, the Panthers focused on their offensive lineman, agreeing to deals with guards Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis.

Jewell, who has been a fixture in the Denver Broncos’ defense, is coming off his third 100-tackle season in the past four years.

Jewell’s ability to get the front seven organized before the snap has been consistently praised by multiple defensive coordinators — most recently by Vance Joseph — since he was picked in the fourth round of the 2018 draft by Denver. Jewell, 29, was a significant part of the team’s defensive rebound this past season after a 70-20 loss to Miami in Week 3, as the Broncos became one of the league’s most stingy scoring defenses the rest of the way.

The Broncos surrendered 22 or fewer points in nine of their past 12 games, fewer than 20 in six of those games.

Jewell had 108 tackles in 2023, setting career highs with 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 3 fumble recoveries.

He missed all but two games in 2021 after tearing a pectoral muscle. He hit free agency in 2022, but he signed a two-year, $11 million extension to stay with the team.

ESPN’s David Newton and Jeff Legwold contributed to this report.
