Fantasy basketball daily notes for Monday: Happy days ahead for Cade Cunningham?

Chasing his fifth scoring title, it’s clear that Durant is an elite fantasy force, while we’re just seeing what Cunningham can do now that his shot is falling with regularity. The top pick has scored 20-plus points in four of his last six games, after doing so just twice in his first 15 professional appearances.

However, the key fantasy storyline out of Detroit is how the team will navigate the fallout from Jerami Grant‘s significant thumb injury. The Pistons’ leading scorer will miss at least six weeks of action, which means that Cunningham, who sees the largest leap in usage rate (4.5%) with Grant off the floor, could continue his ascent.

It’s also arguably worth stashing Detroit’s second-year shooter Saddiq Bey in deeper leagues, as he’s not only due for some positive correction in shooting efficiency, but his production with Grant off the court has been solid this season. He’s averaged 16.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and nearly four assists per 36 minutes without his now-injured teammate.

Lauri Markkanen, Cleveland Cavaliers: 3 points (1-8 FG), 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 TO

SUNDAY

Highlights

Kevin Durant, Brooklyn Nets: 51 points (16-31 FG 14-15 FT), 7 points, 9 assists, 2 blocks

Derrick White, San Antonio Spurs: 24 points (9-17 FG), 8 rebounds, 9 assists, 4 steals

Lowlights

Saddiq Bey, Detroit Pistons: 4 points (2-9 FG), 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 TO

Evan Fournier, New York Knicks: 6 points (2-8 FG), 2 rebounds, 3 assists

At what point should we rename the highlights section to the Jokic update? On Saturday, Denver’s do-everything superstar became the first player in the last 25 years with 35 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in just the first three quarters of a game. In Denver’s resounding win over San Antonio, both Aaron Gordon and Monte Morris stepped up as complementary scorers and playmakers.

San Antonio’s White has been brilliant from a statistical perspective over the last few weeks. He ranks 36th overall on the ESPN Player Rater during the last 15 days thanks to a real rise in both scoring and passing production, while still sustaining his elite defensive rates. While White flirted with a triple-double in Sunday’s win over New Orleans, center Jakob Poeltl scored 24 points while missing just two shots from the floor, becoming only the fourth player in Spurs history with 20-10 on 80% from the floor in multiple games in a season (joining Tim Duncan, Artis Gilmore, and Steve Johnson).

Cleveland’s Garland established a new career-high in assists on Saturday and now has back-to-back games with at least a dozen dimes for the first time in his career. Garland ranks third overall on the Player Rater during the last 15 days, while teammate Jarrett Allen ranks first overall during this same span. Allen has posted 10 consecutive double-doubles since returning from an illness, the most in the league since November 22.

The Knicks were short-handed on Sunday, tasking rookie Quentin Grimes with a larger role. Grimes tallied a career-high 27 points while sinking seven 3-pointers in the loss to the Bucks. However, Grimes had scored only 24 total points over his first 13 career games prior to this outing, suggesting it’s not quite time to roster him in fantasy leagues.

The 76ers stymied Stephen Curry‘s bid for shooting supremacy this past Saturday. The 76ers tasked defensive specialist Matisse Thybulle with tracing Curry through mazes of screens. Thybulle helped limit Curry to just three 3-pointers on 14 attempts and became the only player to ever block two of Curry’s 3-point attempts in a single game. Thybulle now ranks second in the entire league in steal percentage and, amazingly, 16th in block percentage. Given such absurd defensive results, I can see a reason to find room for Thybulle on rotisserie rosters.

Looking ahead to this evening in Indiana, Curry continues to chase the all-time 3-point record. He enters tonight’s game against the Pacers just seven short of Ray Allen’s mark.

Sacramento will be without Richaun Holmes for another game due to an eye injury. Marvin Bagley III has enjoyed the team’s largest leap in DraftKings points per 36 minutes with Holmes off the floor, while Terence Davis enjoys a sizable surge in usage.

Kevin Porter Jr., Danuel House Jr., and Jalen Green have all been ruled out ahead of Houston’s game against the Hawks. Eric Gordon‘s usage rate has risen by a team-high 5.2% with this trio sidelined this season. Garrison Mathews makes for a solid shooting specialist in such situations.

Steven Adams is listed as doubtful to play for the Grizzlies this evening. With Brandon Clarke already ruled out, Xavier Tillman could become busy. Ja Morant will also miss another game due to a knee injury, setting up Tyus Jones as a strong source of assists.

The Heat will be without All-Stars Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler for Miami’s game against the Cavaliers this evening. Kyle Lowry becomes a solid DFS building block, given he’s seen his usage rate leap by nearly 4% with both Adebayo and Butler off the floor this season, while streaming candidate Dewayne Dedmon has averaged 13.7 points and 14.7 rebounds (per 36 minutes) in such scenarios.

Joel Embiid, Philadelphia 76ers: With Adams unlikely to play and Clarke surely sidelined, Embiid is positioned to pounce on an undersized Memphis frontcourt this evening. Looking spry and getting to the line with regularity, Embiid appears ready to deliver to a slate-shifting performance in a plus-matchup.
